For our first M-school class in 2021, we were tasked with creating a company that focused on a UN Sustainable Development goal. Our team chose education, and our company Project Small Talk was born. As a result of the 2020 pandemic, many children fell behind in their social emotional learning skills. We wanted to find a way to help parents teach these skills to their children in a manner that felt effortless and unobtrusive. So, we designed napkins with cartoons that had prompts for parents to address their children with during mealtime.
Why napkins? We figured that if we could create a product that was tied to an action that happens everyday no matter what, our product would have a much higher rate of usage and value to the customer.
In the end, after sixteen weeks we managed to sell over 60 packs of napkins (for a total of approximately 1350 individual napkins sold) through our social media campaign and in person events at Playa Vista Farmers Market. Profits were donated to WISH Charter Schools.
