As the editor-in-chief for the Carillon Yearbook in 2018-2019, I led the book in its art direction. We wanted to make our book feel like a personal journal, like it belongs to the reader. To do this, we introduced copies with stripped down journalism that focused more on what individuals had to say, with some stories being exclusively written by the featured students themselves. With photography, we strayed away from going totally digital by incorporating instant film and in some cases physically manipulating the images for some of the spreads. Through our design, we were able to tie everything together. We kept the design simple, but in order to make it feel more personal we included typography that resembles handwriting, introduced a layering element by incorporating scraps of paper onto some spreads, and doodled over many spreads.
